As we respond to this time of uncertainty, brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important for us to consider not only our own health, but the health of our clients and the community at large. As trusted and experienced real estate advisors, we have quickly pivoted to guide our clients through a completely new home buying and selling experience.
Are You Interested in Housing a Local COVID-19 First Responder?
The world is a very different place than it was just a few weeks ago. As we continue to adapt to defuse the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected so many people close to our homes, the importance of looking after our communities remains constant. To support our first responders, who risk their lives daily to protect us in these uncertain times, it's important to offer every resource we can. For those on Bainbridge Island with vacant ADUs or homes, there may be opportunities to rent your home (for free or for a fee) to first responders so that they may live separately from their own families in order to keep them safe.
Airbnb’s Frontline Stays Program
As you may be aware, AirBnB, a resilient community of rental property hosts—has launched a program called “Frontline Stays” which allow hosts to open their homes to those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their goal is to house 100,000 COVID-19 workers around the world as a way to help the vulnerable and those affected by this crisis. If you are interested in adding your home to this global AirBnB program, or if you are interested in donating, please click the button below to learn more about their work.
In anticipation of how AirBnB’s initiative will play out in our local area, Bainbridge Prepares, in partnership with Housing Resources Bainbridge, is gathering names of local property owners who are interested in possibly providing this type of temporary housing.
At this time, there is not a local program through Bainbridge Prepares or HRB to connect property owners with first responders, however this may change as conditions change. At this time, we are simply gathering information.

This is a challenging time, and we appreciate all of the ways in which you are doing your part to lift up others during this crisis. Even as we keep our physical distance from one another, this is a time for us to come together in solidarity.
Extraordinary Has a New Address: New Bainbridge Island Flagship Branch
Last week, our new Bainbridge Island branch office on Winslow Way opened. Occupying approximately one half of the Old Hardware Store – a nostalgic icon of Bainbridge Island heritage built in 1948 – our global real estate brand is now poised for growth. I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a space as beautiful as this one.
Before and After: Late 60's Kitchen Brought into the 21st Century
You can see more pictures and full information for this home at: http://ericplace.bainbridgehouses.com
When the current owners purchased this home it had a very quaint kitchen with the original late 60's cabinetry painted white with black checker style vinyl tile flooring. While the layout is fully functional offering a large eating area/gathering spot and family room just off the open kitchen, as the heart of the home - the finishes just didn't cut it.
Not only did the current owner want to dress the kitchen up a bit, they also wanted to reinforce a connection to the eating/gathering area for a better sense of flow in the home. They wrapped the lower cabinets around the wall to create a narrow serving counter that provides additional storage for china, but also a welcoming focal point as one enters the room.
The striped wall paper against the checkered flooring just had to go!!
Before, the kitchen merely had shelving in the far right hand corner and laminate counter tops. The 4 square checkerboard pattern on the floor was much too large for the space, making it look smaller than it was.
The owners installed custom hickory finished ash cabinetry with crown molding to the ceiling, and full extension soft close drawers. They enclosed the refrigerator, installed solid black granite counter tops and gleaming Patagonian rosewood floor. What a difference! Not only did it dress up the kitchen but changed the feel of the entire house.

Recently Sold Property Featured on CNBC
Exciting News! One of the properties that I sold last year was featured on CNBC.com. The feature story is about structures from around the world that have been converted in homes. Take a look - there are some incredible, interesting homes and it is exciting to see Bainbridge Island getting some recognition on a national level:
One-of-a-Kind Converted Homes
Warehouses, factories, barns, and churches are commonly re-purposed into residences, but for the adventurous buyer with a budget for renovation, no structure is off limits as a potential home.
Underground missile silos that have been upcycled into residences have gotten plenty of play in the media , but those smack of refuges from zombie apocalypse. An almost endless supply of innovative converted homes exist that are more inspirational (not to mention blessed with natural daylight and views).
Click ahead to see ten such older structures that have been re-imagined into homes.

Aside the Barn, I had two favorites. Look at this converted grain silo:
Location: Woodland, Utah, USA
Architect: Gigaplex
This unusual home on the Provo river is made from adjoining corrugated metal grain silos to form an 1800 square-foot space. It was designed to accommodate a man and his visitors and grandchildren in cubby-like bedroom pods which are equipped with stereo sound and flat screen monitors. Embedded wire mesh heats the floors and the propane stove can be controlled by Internet.
My second pick is the converted concrete water tower in the Netherlands:
Location: Soest, Netherlands
Architect: ZeccThis 1931 water tower was converted in 2002 into a nine-level modern private home using steel, concrete and glass, including a three-story window. Many former water towers have become homes.
And finally, our barn on Bainbridge Island - which has and always will be one of my favorite homes on the island:
Location: Bainbridge Island, Wash., USA
Architect: Don FrothinghamThis former 1905 dairy barn overlooking the Olympic Mountains was adapted into a residence in 1980. At 2400 square feet, it boasts the soaring ceilings you’d expect from a barn, but none of the heat problems, as a new extra-insulated roof was added in the conversion. Other farmyard themed home conversions are made incorporating other farm outbuildings or even using barn ruins.
